Previously members of the Kibingo community traveled 1 km to access water that was used for bathing, drinking, and washing. The lack of sanitation in the community was producing a high rate of liver infections along with other water-borne illnesses.
Ndebesa Johnson, a teacher in Kibingo, shared the following: “This borehole will mostly benefit our pupils who have been walking far distances to fetch water. This water they would walk far for was not clean or good for their health. But now we have a safe source of water. God bless all the donors who gave to give us this water.”
Kibingo was very patient in receiving a well. It took three separate trips over the last 6 months to finally be able to dig this well! The first attempt ended with equipment malfunctions, while the second attempt occurred during the rainy season when the ground was too wet, putting the trucks at risk of sinking.
When health and hygiene training began, the community was mourning the death of a young child and elderly man. Those attending the training arrived late, ready to learn about healthy living and the new freedom the well would bring them. Teaming up with the local church, Living Water International workers also shared many Bible stories with children and community members. A man named Geofrey came and heard about the teachings and accepted salvation in Christ.
The 600+ members in the Kibingo community now have access to clean water and are trained in practices to begin forming a healthier community. The water committee consists of 6 men and 5 women.
